THROUGH THE LENS OF THE MANAKI BROTHERS
THE FIRST BALKAN VIDEOGRAPHERS
The entire photographic and film oeuvre of the brothers Janaki (1878 – 1954) and Milton (1882 – 1964) Manaki is of exceptional importance for both Macedonian and world history and visual art. The authentic and rare recordings of significant figures from the beginning of the 20th century and today portray historical events, such as the Ilinden Uprising, the Young Turk Revolution, the First and Second World Wars. The Balkan “Brothers of the Light” became chroniclers of a historical time, especially after buying a camera from the “Bioscope” series – “camera 300” and recording the first film recording in the Balkans named after their “Baba Despina” (grandma Despina). The recordings from the Great War, which are of exceptional documentary power, bring us today the faces of the known and/or unknown soldiers from the two opposing blocs, as well as the struggle for survival of the local population.
